GHG Emissions in relation to SustAinable DEvelopment Goals
The United Nations (UN) established Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in a global efforts to achieve sustainability. These guidelines
allow for an intersectional approach to sustainability which address political, economic and social issues. UBC heavily follows the SDGs when implementing solutions for their initiatives.

Decreasing GHG Emissions also allows for UBC to meet United Nations SDG Goal 11. Efforts to decrease emissions have been solved through green building innovations. The UBC Residential Environmental Assessment Program (REAP) has changed its mission to align with a more sustainable approach. In fact, REAP started a Neighbourhood Low Carbon Strategy in the fall of 2020 to reducing the overall emissions in the area.

In 2019 UBC declared a climate emergency while simultaneously pledging to reduce emissions. As a result, UBC is pursuing the United Nations SDG Goal 13 of combatting climate change. In order to meet this goal, there have been a commitment to divest from fossil fuels and accelerate the UBC Strategic Plan and Climate Action Plan.
In order to keep UBC responsible for their actions, student environmental groups on campus have been putting pressure on the university. Climate Justice UBC (UBCC350) was a huge proponent to pushing the university to divest from fossil fuels. Other groups like Extinction Rebellion UBC held a hunger strike to commit a full divestment. As a result, the university promised to be more transparent about sustainability and climate action (CBC News). |
